Do The Opposite Of What Everyone Else Does

Sep 6, 2025

Ever see that Seinfeld episode where Jerry tries to return his jacket out of spite?

For that reason alone, they won’t let him return it, since there’s nothing inherently wrong with the jacket. He tries to change his reason, but it’s too late, he already said “spite.”

I really believe that show was so popular because it put human nature on full display. People relate, even if they don’t want to admit it.

Recently, I was talking to a lawyer friend of mine, and he told me people really do sue out of spite. I couldn’t believe it, financially successful individuals willingly spending ten times more on legal fees just to avoid paying what would have been a minor settlement.

I was baffled and said something like, “How could someone be so unreasonable?”

He looked at me and said:

“Successful people aren’t successful because they’re reasonable. Sometimes you have to do unreasonable things to get to that level.”

That stuck with me.

Most people will make the average decision to remain at their banks in average mutual funds.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but you’ll likely get average results.

And if you’re reading this, you’re likely not average. 😉

Two quotes I like from Earl Nightingale come to mind:

“If you don’t have a good model for success, just look at what everybody else is doing and do the opposite.”

“Whatever the majority of people is doing, under any given circumstances, if you do the exact opposite, you will probably never make another mistake as long as you live.”

Because let’s be honest, most people aren’t doing well financially.

  • They’re broke, in debt, and living paycheque to paycheque.

  • They have no plan, no savings, no clear goals.

  • They put this stuff off for “someday,” which never comes.

Why would you want to follow that?

You don’t have to.

When you decide to act differently, to take control, invest, and plan, it might feel a little weird at first.

  • It’s “weird” to skip the impulse purchases and invest that money instead.

  • It’s “weird” to work with a professional instead of trying to figure it all out alone.

  • It’s “weird” to set big goals and actually hit them.

But that’s how you stop being average, and start building real wealth.

I’m not saying you need to be spiteful, or a Steve Jobs (notoriously known for being awful to his employees but wildly successful). Just don’t settle for being average, and you’ll get above-average results.

If you’ve been meaning to get your finances sorted but keep putting it off because you “don’t have time” or “don’t know where to start,” let’s fix that.

Just hit reply, send me a message. No pressure, no jargon, just real answers and a plan you can actually follow.
